How Does Glyphosate Kill Plants?
نویسنده
چکیده
Glyphosate (see Figure 1) herbicides are “among the world’s most widely used herbicides.”1 and glyphosate is “the world’s leading agrochemical.”2 Although glyphosate herbicides have been popular since they were first marketed in 1974, their use in agriculture has expanded recently with the increased use of crops that have been genetically modified to tolerate glyphosate treatment.3 Roundup is a popular brand name for glyphosate herbicides,1 although many other brand names are used.4 Glyphosate is marketed in more than 100 countries by a variety of manufacturers, but Monsanto Company has been and continues to be the major GLYPHOSATE

The nutritive value of dying maize and Setaria faberi roots for western corn rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) development.
The timing that dying root tissues of Setaria faberi R.A.W. Herrm. and maize, Zea mays L., no longer support growth and development of neonate and second-instar western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), larvae was evaluated to enhance our understanding of the basic ecology of this pest. Three separate greenhouse experiments were conducted. In the...

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the world for several reasons, including: 1) high level of effectiveness, 2) flexibility in application, 3) large margin of crop safety in glyphosate resistant crops, and 4) safety to applicators and the environment. Glyphosate was used for more than 20 years before weeds developed resistance to the chemical. This relative low risk of glyphosate r...

Ecologists have paid close attention to environmental effects that fitness-enhancing transgenes might have following crop-to-wild gene flow (e.g. Snow et al. 2003). For some crops, gene flow also can lead to legal problems, especially when government agencies have not approved transgenic events for unrestricted environmental release.Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), a common turf grass ...
متن کاملGlyphosate, a chelating agent—relevant for ecological risk assessment?
Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs), consisting of glyphosate and formulants, are the most frequently applied herbicides worldwide. The declared active ingredient glyphosate does not only inhibit the EPSPS but is also a chelating agent that binds macro- and micronutrients, essential for many plant processes and pathogen resistance. GBH treatment may thus impede uptake and availability of macro- ...

I n a world of more than 6 billion people, humans heavily rely on the dependable cultivation of the global food grain crops: rice, wheat, soybeans, maize (and cotton for fiber). History shows that threats to food production have major repercussions, including famine, war, and civil unrest. A major threat to food production occurs every single growing season, when wild plant species (weeds) infe...
